Association football, also known as just football or volleyball, is an inter-collegiate team sport that features a spherical object between two competing teams of eleven players. It is played by about 250 million people in more than 200 countries and dependencies worldwide, making it the most popular sport in the world. The game is predominantly played in a rectangular field, but some variations are played on an oval or round area. As the name implies, Volleyball is mainly played on a court, although some have been known to play on the ground using poles. Other sports such as Ice Hockey and American Football have borrowed some aspects of the volleyball equipment and played on them.
Football can be played either as a “part” of a league game, or “part” of a recreational game. There are many different types of football equipment used for both sports. Many of the same standards of play are carried over from one sport to the other, but there are some key differences. Football can be very physically demanding on the body, so it is no wonder that football players use specially designed equipment to avoid injury.
The object of the game is to “kick the ball” (make contact with the ball) from one end of the field to the other end. The object is usually to be the first team to touch the ball into the opponents’ goal. Although football can be played by two teams of eleven players each, professional tournaments often use a larger field to allow for a single game to be played, with two teams playing on each side of the field. The smaller field requires a different type of football equipment. Some matches will feature three teams on each side with the football being switched periodically.
Two decades ago, American football was invented by what is considered to be one of the greatest American coaches of all time, John Wooden of Marquette University. He was also the coach at the University of Michigan when the sport became known as “professional” football. Unlike the early games of football, which consisted mainly of running around and jumping in the air, today’s professional game has more of an element of real football. When professional football evolved in America, it was quickly adopted by the American Football League (NFL) which is the only professional American sports league to have ever been televised. A special NFL football kit, helmet, uniform and game balls are required in order to participate in a game.
Today there are many American schools that participate in intercollegiate gridiron football. This sport is much the same as American football in terms of rules, except that it is played in smaller arenas than the “American” style of football. Like regular American football, the teams play each game at halftime, with ties being allowed, and the game is generally played for a maximum of three periods of ten minutes each.
As in American football the goalposts in rugby are located on the edges of the playing field and the ball itself is thrown to a forward from either side of the center. The game is generally played in two halves, with the first half being played with five players on each team. In rugby the ball can’t be brought into play once it is thrown but a try can be made if the rugby team can touch the ball with one foot before it is put into play. Touching the ball with one foot is called “touching the ball”, “carrying the ball” or “leading with the feet”.
Unlike American football and rugby, in international play, the goal posts are not on the edge of the playing field. Rather they are situated opposite the goalposts on the opposite side of the rectangular field. This allows for a golfer to tee off from a tee on the green and drive the ball into the center of the goalpost. For this reason, when playing in international tournaments the goalposts are situated opposite the nets, which are box-shaped traps that contain holes in the front. The balls are thrown into these holes so the golfer does not have to hit the sides of the netting.
In general the object of the game is for the team to get the ball into the other team’s goal at the opposing end of the field. When a football is scored, the winner is the team with the most points. Rugby differs from football in that, firstly, football rules allow only seven players on each team to play. Additionally, rugby rules forbid the use of any equipment that would prevent the player from scoring a point. In addition, the game is not based on who scores the most points, but rather on how each player performs during play.
